DU Pioneers close out Omaha pod play with 3-1 loss to St. Cloud State – The Denver Post
The University of Denver concluded its 10-game National College Hockey Conference pod play Sunday with a 3-1 loss to St. Cloud State at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb.
The Pioneers finished a disappointing 3-6-1 at the pod. They began 0-3 and finished 0-2-1. They went a combined 0-4 against Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State.
Freshman Carter Savoie gave DU a 1-0 lead with his NCAA-high seventh goal midway through the second period. But the Huskies tied it a little more than four minutes later and the teams entered the third period tied 1-1.
St. Cloud’s Veeti Miettinen beat goalie Magnus Chrona with a wrist shot from between the circles midway through the third period and the Huskies added a late empty-net goal.
The Pioneers next play Jan. 1 at Colorado College to begin a home-and-home series as the NCHC schedule returns to playing in home buildings. The Tigers are the only NCHC opponent DU has yet to play. The teams are scheduled to play six times, including the regular-season finale March 6 at Denver.
