Red-hot Yonathan Daza bats 4-for-4 with a homer
Rockies 11, Reds 7
Tuesday at Goodyear Ballpark
On the mound: Right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez, battling to make the roster, most likely as a long reliever, cruised through his first three innings, getting the Reds to pound the ball into the dirt. Two walks and two singles got him into trouble in the fourth and he departed with two outs and the bases loaded. His line: 3 2/3 innings, two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts … Righty reliever Scott Oberg, coming back from surgery to prevent blood clots in his arm, continued his solid work. He pitched a spotless fifth inning with two strikeouts. … Top pitching prospect Ryan Rolison got rocked in the eighth, yielding three runs on a leadoff homer to Mark Payton, a walk, a single and a two-run double. Payton’s homer was a massive shot, clearing the scoreboard beyond left field. Rolison also gave up a homer in the ninth to finish his 1 2/3 innings having given up four runs on four hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
At the plate: Outfielder Yonathan Daza continued his relentless push to make the roster. He came up a triple short of a rare Cactus League cycle, going 4-for-4 with a solo homer. Daza, who’s out of minor-league options, is batting .464 with a 1.143 OPS this spring. … Connor Joe, who’s certainly garnered attention, is batting .368 after batting 2-for-2, including a three-run homer in the second. He’s hit three Cactus League dingers.
Worth noting: Tuesday’s game was the Rockies’ only night game of their Cactus League season.
